7 easy ways to practice Spanish at home for nursery children

Date: 26/08/2025

Are you ready to introduce the Spanish language to your little one from the comfort of your own home? Here are 7 fun and simple ways for introducing Spanish from your home to your nursery-aged child. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, or carer, these tips are simple and easy to incorporate into your everyday life:

1. Meet Peppa Pig and Friends, ¡en Español!

Preschoolers adore familiar characters – and Peppa Pig tops the list! Why not switch things up and watch Peppa in Spanish? Spanish-dubbed children’s shows offer a natural and relaxed way to immerse their little ears in a new language. The bright visuals, repetitive phrases and familiar voices make it easy for little ones to pick up everyday Spanish vocabulary without even realising they’re learning a new language.

Top Tip: Start with short 5-minute episodes and let them grow into it at their own pace.

2. Musical adventures in Spanish

Music is magical especially when it comes to learning a second language at home. Why not recreate the fun by turning your living room into a mini fiesta with a playlist of catchy Spanish songs? Maybe you’ve recently been on holiday to Spain and your little one danced their heart out at a mini disco. Repetition, rhythm, and rhyme help cement new words in a child’s brain – while having loads of fun at the same time!

Top Tip: Encourage your little one to clap, dance, or shake a maraca. The more fun they’re having, the better.

3. Bedtime stories in two languages

Bedtime books in Spanish are a lovely way to gently introduce new vocabulary. Don’t worry if you don’t speak any Spanish yourself – look for books that are visually engaging, repeat simple phrases, and include both English and Spanish. Your child doesn’t need to understand every word; just hearing the rhythm and sound of Spanish helps build familiarity and comfort with storytelling in a second language.

Top Tip: A great beginner title is “Buenas Noches Luna” (Goodnight Moon). Look out for other simple bilingual picture books – we’ve listed a few suggestions at the end of this blog.

4. Introduce greetings and playtime in Spanish

Small words go a long way. Start sprinkling Spanish greetings and phrases into your everyday routine. Think of them as little seeds – plant them now and watch them grow.

Begin with:

  • “Hola” (hello),
  • “Buenos días” (good morning),
  • “Adiós” (goodbye) and
  • “Gracias” (thank you).

Use them naturally during playtime, snack time or when tucking your child into bed. This creates a pressure-free connection to Spanish in daily life.

5. Explore colours and numbers through play

Your child’s toy box is a treasure trove for learning! Use colourful LEGO bricks, wooden blocks, puzzle pieces or toy animals to explore Spanish colours, numbers and animal names. Learning through play makes everything more fun and more memorable.

6. Family language detectives

Make Spanish a family mission! Children learn best when they see adults getting involved. Become language detectives together. Why not label some everyday items that are in your fridge or kitchen (eg. leche for milk, mantequilla for butter). As you use the item, say the word aloud. It’s a simple and easy way to build vocabulary naturally.

7. Use a few Spanish phrases at the dinner table

If you eat at the same time as you’re little one, try mentioning the Spanish words for the foods you’re eating. You could also label everyday items like “una silla” (a chair) or “una mesa” (a table) to bring Spanish into your mealtimes. Simple phrases, repeated regularly, can make a big difference over time.

When your little one repeats a word or recognises a colour or number – celebrate it! Building a positive relationship with Spanish now means they’re more likely to enjoy it as they grow.

Always remember - introducing Spanish at home doesn’t need to be perfect or overly structured. It just needs to be consistent, positive and FUN.
